The Museum of Moravian Slovakia was opened on June 1, 1914, even though the first impulse for its establishing came from the Ethnographic Exhibition of Czechoslovakia which took place a lready in 1895. At first, the Museum was set up in the building of former Jesuit dormitory at the Masaryk square. However, following the First World War, the Museum was closed down and the building was utilized as barracks. The Museum had to wait until 1929, when it could finally move into new premises - the former shooting range building, purchased by the town hall from the municipal shooters' society. This building has belonged to the museum ever since. The building was added an extension in two phases in 1936 and 1940 - 1942.
The extension, designed by architect Bohuslav Fuchs, now houses exhibition premises, depositories and offices. The Museum invites its visitors to see its permanent exposition Slovacko (Moravian Slovakia), along with various other temporary exhibitions of different kinds (ethnographic, historical, archaeological, etc.) placed in the two other exhibition halls of the building. Besides the exhibitions, the Museum organizes regular series of lectures on homeland study, biology and travelogues, and twice a year, there are week-long demonstrations of folk crafts.
