U Maliru
Maltezske nam. 11, Little Quarter, tel. 2451 0269
Prague's most expensive restaurant by far. It is situated in a house from 16th century with its original painted ceilings intact. It is the only restaurant in Prague which serves authentic French food.
Ambiente
Manesova 59, Prague 2, tel. 627 5913
An American-style restaurant with an american-style menu. One of the most overrated restaurants in Prague.
Govinda Vegetarian Club
Soukenicka 27, New Town, tel. 2481 6016
The Club offers basic self-service vegetarian Indian meals - rice, lentils, vegetable curry, bread. Most of the ingredients are grown on the Krishna's organic farm outside Prague. Wheelchair access.
Parnas
Smetanovo nabrezi 2, Old Town, tel. 2422 9248
Parnas and its adjoing café are situated just opposite the National Theatre, overlooking the Vltava river.
V Zatisi
Liliova 1, Betlemske nam., Old Town, tel. 2422 8977
One of the nicest dining places in Prague, situated on the corner of a charming cobbled square. The menu features the likes of homemade pasta, fresh fish and a daily special that puts a deluxe spin on traditional Czech cooking.
Bugsy's
Parizska 10 [entrance on Kostecna], Old Town, tel. 232 9943
The best cocktail-bar in town. A 90-page dring menu including 217 coctails and the bar staff mix them properly.
U Sudu
Vodickova 10, New Town, tel. 2421 3499
Originally a small, dark wine bar on the ground floor, it has expanded down into three gothic cellars. The cellars have been claimed by students. It is worth visiting in September, when the "burcak" arrives, but you can expect a hangover the next day. Burcak is the Czech equivalent of beaujolais nouveau.
U Fleku
Kremencova 11, Old Town, tel. 2491 5118
The most famous pub in Prague, it has brewed fine 13 degree dark beer on the premises for centuries. The beer is incomparable, but very expensive. Most of the customers are Germans, singing and swinging glasses to oom-pah-pah music.
Dobra cajovna
Vaclavske namesti 14, New Town, tel. 2423 1480
An oriental-style tearoom set back from the outside bustle. Tea, you can choose from an extraordinary menu, is served in dinky little finger bowls.
Malostranska Kavarna
Malostranske namesti 5, Little Quarter, tel. 533 092
A café bar originally founded in 1874 and re-opened recently. An ideal rest stop for a very Central European fix of coffee and cream cake.
U Vejvodu
Jilska 4, Old Town, tel. 2421 0591 One of the best Czech pubs in the city, situated in a crumbling Old Town backstreet. It is popular with tourists withour being a tourist trap and it is still the favourite haunt of many Czech.
Slovansky dum

Before the war, this used to house the famous Café Continental, meeting ground for many of Prague's German speaking intellectuals. Between May and September you can walk through the interlocking courtyards and find an oasis that serves inexpensive beer.
