The first concrete written record concerning Brno dates from 1091, and deals with the castle. It was recorded by the well known chronicler Kosmas in his description of the campaign of King Vratislav against his brother Konrad. This text can be found in the Bohemian Chronicle. There are deeds which purport to document the existence of Brno from an earlier date, but they are forgeries. It is still not known for sure exactly where Bretislav's castle was situated. The site of Spilberk, which was proposed and defended by some historians cannot be ruled out.
Support for Spilberk is based on evidence of the existence of two large towers , one of which was rectangular and the other circular, at that site. It still has not been ascertained if these towers are analogous with structures dating from the later period of Premysl Otakar II. (1233 - 1278) or whether they are elements which also appear in the oldest Moravian royal castles.
Since 1961 Spilberk has housed Museum of Brno city.
