Scenery of the Cheb district is most varied. The central part is formed by the Cheb Basin and is surrounded with a range of hills. From the south, it is the Cesky les (the Bohemian Forest), followed by the range of the Smrciny (the Spruce Hills) on the west, a small part of the Krusne hory (the Ore Mountains) in the north and the Slavkovsky les (Imperial Forest) further on. Just above Marianske Lazne, the circle is closed with the Tepelska vrchovina (Tepla Hills). The geographic articulation and the complex course of geological evolution contributed to numerous springs of mineral water and to the formation of a number of attractive natural sites accompanied with specific flora and fauna. That resulted in declaring many sites in the area natural parks, reserves and monuments.
The history of Cheb one of the oldest town in Bohemia started in 9th century. Cheb is not only the meaningful historical place but it is also the important cultural and business centre. The Cheb castle from 12th century is oldest preserved place of King Jiri from Podebrady - mediaval citizen houses, churches, fountains and monastery.
The Cheb region was linked to Bohemia as a pledge territory in 1322 during the reign of Jan Luxembourg. As a result Cheb received extraordinary privileges, and a provincial assembly, and became the third most important Czech city after Prague and Kutna Hora.
The center of attention for visitors is the world-renowned Spalicek at the bottom part of the ancient square lined with beautiful Gothic and Renaissance houses. Cheb Castle, with a chapel and fortifications (built in the second half of the 12th century on the site of an original Slavic fortress) is among the most beautiful central European Roman landmarks. The history of the town can be seen by visitors in an exhibition at the Cheb Museum.
The natural surroundings of Cheb almost seem designed for recreation and the travel industry, which sees concentrated activity near the Skalka and Jesenice dams, which stand close to the town.
Due to its unique architecture (the best preserved historical town-center in Europe), Cheb, where more than 32,000 people live today, was pronounced an Urban Historical Landmark in 1981.
Cheb is frequented by many tourists, it lies within the Western Bohemia Spa-triangle, and it represents Bohemia as one of the three countries of the so-called Euroregio Egrensis - Bohemia, Saxony, and Bavaria.
